Festival of Speed 2022 Timed Shootout Preview

But there is one moment when that calm atmosphere is cut with an element of tension as things gets serious on the Hill, and all eyes turn to the climax of the weekend – the Timed Shootout.

Generally speaking, everything is better when there’s an element of competition involved. The jeopardy is what makes it exciting, and we can’t help but love the drama as a selection of some of the world’s best drivers sling an equally impressive list of some of the best cars, road and racing, that have ever been built.

Last year it was won by Rob Bell in the McLaren 720 GT3X, but who will be taking the spoils in 2022?

One of the best things about the Shootout is the wide spread of cars, from eras spanning more than a Century from 1903 right up to 2022. Among the highlights are the likes of the Fiat S76 ‘Beast of Turin’, a Ferrari 156 ‘sharknose’, a Dodge Viper GTS-R, and Travis Pastrana’s ludicrous Gymkhana Subaru GL Wagon.

Alongside the 156, the list of Formula 1 machines taking part in the Shootout also includes a Cooper-Climax T43, a Shadow DN9, a McLaren MP4/1 and a Benetton 192.

As always, the BTCC will get its moment to shine when a selection of four Super Tourers from will each make their way up the Hill, giving us all another listen of that distinct naturally-aspirated engine note.

At the more recent end of the timeline, you can expect to see the cutting-edge H24Racing Hydrogen Le Mans racer, electric off-road trucks from Extreme E and the dynamic debut of the Gen3 Formula E machine, culminating in the 2022 Dakar-wining Toyota Gazoo Racing Hilux.

You can see all of this and more when Practice for the Timed Shootout starts on Thursday at 15:40. A second run will take place on Friday 15:20 before Shootout Qualifying at 16:10 on Saturday and the main event on Shootout Sunday at 15:30. The way to watch is to either be here, or if you’re not so lucky, it will be televised live on ITV.
