The culmination of four days of the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard comes with Sunday afternoon's Timed Shootout. Damp conditions meant that everything was to play for, and that things might be shaken up following the Volkswagen ID. R's sensational sub-40 second qualifying time.
And it transpired that times were, inevitably, not as fast as they had been in qualifying. But it was still a nail-biting spectacle. Oliver Solberg's run in his Citroën DS3 WRX car is one to remember. Understeer into the first corner led him to run wide, and the long, controlled slide as he gathered everything back together was spectacular. His time was then beaten by father Petter in his Volkswagen Polo WRX car.
But the car we were all waiting to see was the electric Volkswagen ID. R. Romain Dumas was the hot favourite, and went on to post a time of 42.32 seconds – down on his qualifying time but enough to secure overall honours on the day. Second was taken by Petter Solberg, making for an odd couple of Volkswagens, while the third spot was taken by Oliver Solberg.
But there's much more to the timed shootout than the top three places. Take a look through this gallery to see everything from the Fiat S76 to the V8 Judd powered BMW 3 Series. Enjoy!
