Gallery: Prototypes, GTs and sportscars

17th July 2018
Andrew Willis

Fancy a massive, loosely defined, jamboree of images showing a plethora of sleek, pacey, good-looking machines from the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard? Well, then you’ve clicked on the right article. Settle in for the sportscar gallery and prepare for a major case of motor envy.

The good news is we’ve had a huge selection of these cars, from all sorts of eras to keep everyone happy.

One daily highlight was the shimmering and graceful looking 1964 Jaguar E-type ‘low-drag’ Coupe running up the hill as part of our 70 years of XK celebration. It’s a testament to the iconic lines of this car that it can still hold its own amongst the very latest sports car kit. An absolute stunner.

Talking of the latest kit, we were privileged to welcome Porsche’s newest Le Mans winner. The ‘Pink Pig’ 911 RSR, which must be the most photographed and written about car of the year so far, but who are we to stop the ‘Pig’ and Porsche enjoy the limelight. It was here as part of their 70th birthday celebrations after all.

The German manufacture also displayed and run a wide range of historic and modern 911s, as expected, as well as a Porsche Carrera GT and a Porsche 959 amongst others as part of the Porsche moment in front of Goodwood House.

One sports car on show this weekend we wanted to highlight (without blowing out Porsche’s birthday cake candles too soon) is the Renault-Alpine A442B, which beat Porsche competition to take the 1978 Le Mans trophy, and a stark example of how wide and open the definition of sports cars can be.

We could go on calling out sportscars from the 110 years of motorsport engineering for a very long time, but we think you’d rather just have a look at them all. Get stuck into the gallery and try your best to pick your favourite. It’s a struggle.
