The understated fashion in which Singer displays its cars at the Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard always speaks volumes about the quiet confidence and singularity of thought in which the premium restomod brand goes about its business. And this year, sat atop a modest plinthe with little to no fuss surrounding it is its latest offering. A world debut of the Turbo Study. A stunning reimagining of a 964-generation Porsche 911 Turbo.
Born out of myriad requests to Singer for restoration services that incorporate turbocharging, more than 70 owners have already reserved bespoke restorations with the california-based shop. All enabled by the Study. And as we get closer to the debut road-going forced-induction grand-tourer, it’s easy to see why there has been such a swell of demand.
As ever with Singer, cliches aside, the Turbo Study is a genuine work of art. When a car looks this good, and is so exquisitely put together, there’s no need for gimmicks or theatrics to announce its arrival. As its name suggests, it is a true study and celebration of the 911 Turbo’s form and function. Augmented with an extra special dusting of Singer’s mod magic.
Presented in a shimmering Wolf Blue, the lightweight carbon fibre bodywork has a pronounced front bumper and deploys a classic Turbo era ‘whale-tail’ rear spoiler. Here a clever ‘shark fin’ acts as an intake and supplies cold air to the engine bay to optimize combustion and cooling performance.
Prominent wheel arches cradle the retro-inspired 18-inch aluminium wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres. An ABS braking system nestles inside, used to bring the power of the 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged, intercooled flat-six with electric wastegate and six-speed manual transmission under control when things inevitably get interesting through the rear wheels.
The inclusion of such creature comforts like traction control and even electronically adjustable heated seats shows that Singer has pitched the Turbo Study as a usable daily driver. Again in response to owners’ preference. Even the power output of 517PS (386kW) can be dialed up or down depending on the tastes and wants of individuals.
We can only imagine how exquisite it is to drive. But for now, we’ll make do longingly watching the Turbo Study sat pride of place on its plinth outside Goodwood House. Basking the crowds in the elegance and turbocharged purpose it was born to project.
