The Polestar 5 flexes its muscles for the first time at Goodwood

The Polestar 5 Prototype is here at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, flexing its muscles on the Hill and, boy, has it some muscles to flex. Today the Swedish all-electric marque revealed the targeted power numbers for its flagship super saloon. The Polestar 5 will be an 884PS (650kW), 900Nm (664lb ft) car if Polestar reaches its goals come time to put the car on sale. Mercy, mercy.

The low-slung four-door coupe is also set to feature an 800-volt electrical architecture allowing for superior electric output and faster charging.

“The new powertrain we are working on will set a new brand benchmark in our high-performing cars,” said Jorg Brandscheid, Polestar’s Chief Technical Officer. “Combining strong electric motor engineering ability with advances in light-weight platform technology is leading to truly stunning driver’s cars.”

Polestar is promising that the 5 won’t just be a speed machine either, with a platform engineered to handle its enormous grunt. It should be light-weight, rigid and high-tech, with what Polestar calls “low-volume performance car attributes”.

Present only in mule form as it is at FOS 2022, we can really get a feel for how the Polestar 5 is taking shape. While some of the more extreme dimensions of the Precept concept from which it takes inspiration have been pegged back, this is still a seriously sexy performance saloon. Highlights in the disguise tell us those fantastic double-L light signatures up front should make their way to the production car. In the silhouette and in the livery, we can see the hips and the way the nose droops down from atop the font wheels – a style element difficult to achieve when there’s an engine under there.

All in, this is going to be a seriously fast, seriously good-looking and high-quality four-door super-coupe. If Polestar have got the dynamics right, the Audi E-Tron GT and the Porsche Taycan will have a fight on their hands.
