A Ford RS200 is special enough, a purpose-built Group B rally and rallycross-bred machine with four-wheel-drive and a 1.8- or 2.1-litre, mid-mounted turbocharged engine. But one with 800PS? I think the appropriate word would be ‘twitchy’.
In fact this particular car, a 1986 RS200 Evo 2 owned by Pat Doran, was so twitchy that Doran lost control of the car on the approach to Molecomb at the 2017 Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard. The crash destroyed all of the rear bodywork, but Doran and his team set to work overnight to rebuild this bonkers machine, and the two days later he set one of the fastest times of the Timed Shootout with a 50.98-second Hill run. What a way to turn things around.
