While all eyes were on the M3 Touring, as a model we’ve never had the benefit of being able to buy, it’s worth remembering that at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, we are witness to the return of a legendary BMW badge. The M4 CSL marks the return of Coupe Sport Licht after an 18-year absence.
That little L makes all the difference, with the M4 CSL dropping 100kg via the rear seats being binned, new carbon brakes, lightweight seats, carbon bodywork and a lightweight exhaust. Seeing it spear away from the startline, there won’t be any mistaking this CSL for anything else. Those distinctive bonnet accents and red highlights join the more pronounced boot lid and a whole host of CSL badges, to let people know what it is.
Of course, the CSL gets a healthy power boost too, with the 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six jumping to 550PS (404kW). It’s rear-drive only, which means it’s going to be a bit of a hooligan. It’s bloody rapid too, as we can see with this monster Hill run.
