If you’ve ever had a dinner guest spill red wine all over your ivory table cloth, you’ll share the frustration. Now imagine said dinner guest wasn’t actually a guest at all, but an unsolicited trials bike-riding, suit-wearing hooligan. ‘Surely not’, you must be thinking…
That’s exactly what happened at the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard press dinner, when motorcycle trials world champion Dougie Lampkin turned up unannounced. Despite porting the correct attire, and doing the customary round of the room, Lampkin did anything but blend in… For he had combined his three-piece suit with a helmet and boots and entered the room astride a purring two-stroke – on just one wheel.
Much to the amusement of the assembled guests, Lampkin effortlessly hopped on to the dinner table and completed a length, sending wine glasses sprawling, their contents upended into various laps. Of course, he didn’t forget his manners and stopped for a quick drink and chinwag before leaving the way in which he came…
