Friday at the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard had a dry start as drift cars, tin tops, and rally raiders got the day off to a flier.
The original gentleman’s muscle car, the fabulous 1970 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3, opened proceedings and led an eclectic mix of machines, with everything from the 2023 Audi’s RS Q e-tron Dakar – a petrol-electric sand-swatter with the turbocharged engine from a DTM racer – to the Garage 56 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 NASCAR driven by Jensen Button.
The heavens soon opened, allowing Max Chilton in the McMurtry Spéirling fan car – last year’s Shootout winner – to demonstrate precisely what two tonnes of downforce does for wet weather grip. It was followed by open-top racers covering everything from a 1931 Maserati Tipo to a 1975 Brabham Cosworth BT44B, before rally cars like the 1983 Subaru GL Family Huckster and 2023 Ford Puma WRC took their turn.
Grab a cup of tea, prime the biscuit tin, sit back and relax as we bring you more than ten fun-filled hours of uninterrupted coverage – racing, rallying and driver interviews – from Friday at the 2023 Festival of Speed.
