What an incredible Sunday the final day of the 2015 Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard was. Not only was it full of amazing racing cars, a shootout full of intrigue and celebrations of Derek Bell and Sir Stirling Moss, but that man, the GOAT, made his first appearance in West Sussex – Valentino Rossi was in the house, literally.
Rossi had flown to Goodwood literally straight from victory at the Assen TT that year, arriving in time for the party (and a sandwich) on the Saturday evening, before becoming the centre of attention on Sunday. His balcony moment attracting incredible crowds before he went on to sample three different legendary racing cars (a Porsche 962C, a Lancia Delta S4, and the Le Mans-winning Mazda 787B).
But there were plenty of other highlights that year. The Beast of Turin, Duncan Pittaway’s mighty Fiat S76, made its debut that year, Sir Stirling Moss was leading a convoy of incredible Mercedes 300 SLRs, Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen were in the house, the incredible Darracq 200hp set the pulses racing and Gobstopper II took the first of its back-to-back shootout victories. What a year!
