The name ‘Jackie Stewart’ conjures up images of F1 at its most dangerous, where a tartan-clad Stewart helmet could be seen poking out of the cockpit of various Matras and Tyrells, and speed and 1970’s safety standards collided with deadly consequences several times a year.
But Sir Jackie, as well as being a three-time world champion and the man who really fought for the improvement of driver safety, did more than race in Formula 1. He was of the generation that would spend as much time if not more in a plane as he would in a racing car, travelling the world to drive the wheels off whatever he could. Even so, it’s surprising to look back at Sir Jackie’s career and see a Ferrari.
He drove a number of Ferraris over the years, from 250 GTOs and 250 LMs, to 275 P2s and this, the Ferrari P3. Ferrari’s response to the Ford GT40, its 4.0-litre V12 is stupendous. Wherever you are right now and whatever you’re doing, turn up the volume because this is a good one.
