This is all the proof you’ll ever need that a car doesn’t need to be blindingly fast in order to be thoroughly entertaining on the Hill at the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard. Sure, the McMurtry Spéirling might be impressive, but there’s nothing more enjoyable than watching Mad Mike take to the Hill in whatever ludicrous creation he’s come up with.
Back in 2017, it was this: Mazda REPU B2000 Stadium Super Truck, powered by, you guessed it, a naturally aspirated 13B Wankel rotary engine. It’s called RUMBUL, and produces somewhere in the region of 250PS (184kW), so it’s not crazy fast, but with Mad Mike Whiddett at the wheel, there’s plenty of other things it can do.
If you haven’t watched Stadium Super Truck racing before, it’s utter madness. Big, ultra-lightweight pickup trucks (they weigh around 900kg), with a crazy amount of suspension travel, racing against each other while jumping over ramps that send them ten feet into the air. It’s chaotic perfection.
Stick one of these things on the Festival of Speed Hill and spectacular moments are guaranteed. Even as it launches into Turn One the visual is quite something as the bodywork is pitched right up at the front. Mike is also clearly paying little heed to any requests to keep off the grass; he proceeds to take an excursion off road as he absolutely sends it up past the House. Quality entertainment.
