Most either didn’t believe it, or couldn’t understand the scale of the task, when Mercedes said they were going to stick an F1 engine in a road car. Well, five years on from their initial announcement, we’re seeing and hearing it run for the first time, here for its spectacular world dynamic debut, at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard.
In all its 11,000rpm-revving, 1.6-litre turbocharged glory, the AMG One is now very real, bringing championship-winning F1 power to the road for 275 lucky owners. One of the main challenges, as claimed by former Mercedes-AMG boss Tobias Moers, was getting the F1 engine to idle low enough while being stable and emissions compliant.
While managing it is quite the achievement, a steady clean idle isn’t exactly one of the One’s winning attributes we’re getting to see here. Instead, its acceleration, its incredible active aerodynamics and the sound of modern F1, billowing from the back of a road car. Just don’t show us the bill when it comes to that 31,000-mile rebuild…
