Video: Nick Heidfeld lights up Festival of Speed in LMP1 and F1 cars

Nick Heidfeld went down in Goodwood folklore when he laid down what is still one of the most spectacular ever runs up the Hill at the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard back in 1999. Romain Dumas may have gone faster overall, but Heidfeld’s 41.6 second run still holds the shootout record.

Here we find him back on the Hill in 2013, behind the wheel of his Rebellion Racing Lola B08/60 LMP1 machine and giving its Toyota V8 a decent thrashing as he sends it past the House at not inconsiderable speed. This car was good enough for two podium finishes during the 2013 World Endurance Championship, and we always love to see top tier sportscars here at Goodwood.

As if that wasn’t enough, Nick also treats us to a closer look of the McLaren MP4/13 as he is reunited with his record-setting car, albeit at a much slower pace this time around. Even as he sits for a moment to give onlookers a chance to take in the sight of Mika Häkkinen’s 1998 F1 world championship winning car, the sound of that glorious Mercedes V10 engine ticking over is enough to tingle the nerves. Needless to say, ear defenders are required when he finally floors it and screams away.

The 2022 Festival of Speed is just over a week away, and we’re looking forward to plenty more action just like this.
