If you’ve won Le Mans it goes without saying you’re a fairly decent driver. So we're not at all surprised to see Richard Attwood absolutely whipping the Porsche 917K with which he and Hans Herrmann took victory at Le Mans in 1970 up the Goodwood Hill.
We're more than used to seeing Attwood at full chat at Goodwood, but a 917? Not so much. So rare and valuable are 917s today that it's rare to see one truly hustled, especially one so special as the original Le Mans winner. Here, at the 1999 Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, Attwood is pushing so hard that there’s oversteer at every corner, including on the entry to the corner that is defined by a very, very solid Flint Wall.
You can forget ‘easing the old girl up the Hill’ – Attwood is driving flat out. Proof that if you’ve got it, you never lose it.
