It’s the eve of the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, and we’re in full pre-event excitement mode now. Just in case you needed any more reason to get hyped for this weekend, why not take at look at Rob Bell’s Timed Shootout winning run from the 2021 Festival.
He’s at the wheel of the McLaren 720 GT3X, an insanely engineered and evidently incredibly fast GT3-extra version of the 720 road car. It’s a 710PS (522kW) track car that takes the standard 720 GT3 racing car and throws any adherence to racing regulations out of the window. That means McLaren has been able to make this car as fast as is physically possible, without having to worry about restricting power output.
The result is this: an incredibly fast and beautifully balanced speed machine that tore its way up the Hill in a way that even the timing graphics don't appear to be able to keep up with. The sound of that 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 is pretty delightful, too.
