With a fair bit more spare time on many people’s hands, at the moment, now is a time many are using to reflect. Just as we did, on the 17th of September. In celebration of the late, great, Sir Stirling Moss’s birthday, we shared this video of Mr Motor Racing himself at the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard in 2015.
He was of course aboard his famous ‘722’ Mille Miglia-winning SLR, 60 years on from one of the most momentous victories in motorsport. Sir Stirling as ever spoke casually about his scarcely believable efforts that are immortalised as motor racing legend. He, alongside Denis ‘Jenks’ Jenkinson, finished this most gruelling of trials for both man and machine, following his 07:22 start, in ten hours, three minutes and seven seconds.
Naturally, Sir Stirling then immediately sings the praises of the car – “An unbelievable machine”. Moss and 722 were among seven of the nine SLRs built that assembled at the Festival for the 60th celebration of his victory, which was an unprecedented assemblage. All that’s unclear from the video is whether 722 still had Jenks’ ‘Loo Roll’ instructions on how to break records at the Mille Miglia onboard…
