It always comes up with the goods, doesn’t it? And so again did the Timed Shootout at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed. It was quick, it was exciting and it threw up a fierce contest for victory between some spectacular cars driven by a group of drivers boasting considerable talent.
The exuberance behind the wheel was relentless, from the beginning to the end of this quick-fire Shootout, we saw wheels on the grass, plenty sideways action and several near misses as the drivers pushed as close to the limit as they could on this infamously tricky hillclimb.
In the end there wasn’t an awful lot in it either, with little more than a second proving to be the difference between first and second place, with third a further half a second back. That’s what the Shootout is all about, closely matched cars from multiple disciplines duking it out for ultimate supremacy.
Such a thrilling climax is the perfect way to top off what has been a hugely enjoyable Festival of Speed, that has suffered its fair share of frustrations. We’re already looking forward to doing it all again next year.
There were two McLarens in the top three, with the new Solus single-seater track day special claiming victory with a time of 45.34 seconds. In third place was a quite different machine: the 1976 M26 Formula One car, whose driver Michael Lyons completed the 1.16-mile course in 46.89 seconds. And the meat in that McLaren sandwich? Travis Pastrana in the wonderfully absurd looking Subaru GL Family Huckster. His run looked a bit too sideways to be quick, but he silenced that concern with a time of 46.37 seconds.
