Formula 1 ace Yuki Tsunoda will be attending the 2024 Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard as part of Honda’s anniversary celebrations. The RB driver will be in action on the Goodwood Hill on Sunday 14th July.
It’s 60 years since Honda first participated in an F1 grand prix, and to commemorate the anniversary Tsunoda will be taking to the Hill in a Honda RS272, the car that took Honda’s first F1 victory at the 1965 Mexican Grand Prix with Richie Ginther at the wheel. The car itself is perhaps most famous for its screaming 1.5-litre V12 engine that revved up to 13,000rpm – it’s bound to sound spectacular out on the Hill.
Red Bull-backed Tsunoda joined the F1 grid in 2021 with what was then the AlphaTauri team, scoring points on his debut at that year’s Bahrain Grand Prix. Now in his fourth season, he has remained with the now RB outfit and is currently enjoying his most consistent season to date.
Honda meanwhile has had a long history in F1, from its original entry as a manufacturer from 1964-1968 to its hugely successful time as an engine supplier from 1983-1992 which included a hugely successful partnership with McLaren.
It returned in 2000 to power the new BAR team, eventually taking ownership in 2006 before selling up to Brawn GP at the end of 2008.
A romantic reunion with McLaren in 2015 never quite lived up to hype, but Honda’s partnership with Red Bull from 2018-2021, and then from 2022 as Honda Red Bull Powertrains, returned the Japanese brand to the top of the podium.
Honda will become a power unit supplier for Aston Martin when the regulations arrive in 2026 with increased reliance on electric energy and use of 100 per cent sustainable fuels.
