The Fordwater Trophy is a long-serving race here at the Goodwood Revival that’s been rested a couple of times in the 25 years since it was first run. This year it reverts to its traditional format for the first time since 2019, after returning in name for the sustainably-fuelled all-Porsche 911 race last year.
It returns with a variety of production-based sports and GT cars, this time hailing from 1955-1960 and as with all races in the 2024 schedule the Fordwater Trophy is running exclusively on sustainable fuel.
Action in the 2024 Fordwater Trophy was hotly contested as soon as the flag fell, and the closest battle of all to unfold was between the Austin-Healey 100/6 of Tim Crighton and the Jaguar XK150 of Marc Gordon. This battle of Britsh sportscars lasted the entire race, with the pair constantly trading places as they circulated the Goodwood Motor Circuit. Eventually, a red flag was deployed after 12 laps and it was Gordon in the Coventry machine who took victory.
The rain continued to fall ahead of Official Practice for the Fordwater Trophy, but these light and nimble little sportscars took the conditions in their stride as the field of drivers went about qualifying for Saturday’s race.
It was Tim Crighton who set the quickest time in his Austin-Healey 100/6, a full second quicker than Marc Gordon’s Jaguar XK150 Fixed Head Coupe, heading a stunning field of svelte '50s sportscars from the likes of Porsche, MG and Elva.
It’s one of the more varied grids of the while Revival weekend, with seven manufacturers represented in the top ten. If this Official Practice session was anything to go by then the racing action on Saturday is not to be missed with close battles throughout the field.

While last year’s running featured an all-911 grid and the previous race in 2019 featured later cars up to the mid-‘60s, this year’s grid winds the clock back a few years. In fact, we haven’t run a Fordwater Trophy with this 1955-1960 range of cars since 2013.
Cars you can expect to see in this race range from the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce, to the Austin Healey 100/6 – the winner of the last time this race covered this age range – to the Sunbeam Alpine. You can also look forward to seeing a host of MGAs, Jaguar XK140s and XK150s and Porsche 356s, too.
All sorts of drivers will be present during the Fordwater Trophy, from fully paid-up race winners, to gentleman drivers and owners. Past winners include Le Mans alum Darren Turner, Patrick Blakeney-Edwards and even back in 2001, Charles Morgan. Yes, that Charles Morgan, then-managing director of Morgan, who surprise surprise, was driving a Morgan Plus 4. The last time the race ran this 1955-1960 lineup, Chris Harris joined Jochen Mass and Max Girardo among others in an excellent lineup of drivers and cars.
Last year, the Fordwater Trophy was the late-afternoon fixture and Saturday’s penultimate race, and we expect that to be the same this year, though that’s to be confirmed when the timetable for the Goodwood Revival is released. Practice as ever will take place on the Friday of the Goodwood Revival. You can find the exact timings for the Fordwater Trophy in the 2024 Revival timetable.
