Hypercars don’t get much more hyper than the LaFerrari and at the Goodwood Revival auction on 8 September Bonhams will be selling two of them: one coupe and one open Aperta version. It is shaping up as one of the supercar auction events of the year so far.
Yes, we know, you wait ages for a LaFerrari to come along and then you get two at once. Buses and the ultimate modern roadgoing Ferrari do not have a lot else in common. Bonhams is billing the cars as two of the most highly sought-after, powerful and collectable supercars of the modern age. The two cars are expected to make £9million or so.
And it is only the second time ever that a LaFerrari Aperta has come up for auction anywhere. The only other time was last year when Ferrari donated the final, and 210th, car made to a charity auction in aid of Save the Children. That car sold for €8.3m (about £7.46m today), making it the most valuable 21st century car in a public sale.
Bonhams' presale estimate on the car to be sold at Revival is £5-6.5m, underlying the astonishing value of any LaFerrari – but especially when it comes without a roof. The price for such exclusivity, along with a 200mph wind in the hair, is more than double that for the coupe.
Apart from the removable top, the Aperta is just like the coupe – so 963bhp from the V12 petrol/electric hybrid drivetrain, rear-drive-only seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle, and carbon ceramic brakes among a spec that puts it right at the top of the hypercar tree. Accelerating from 0-186mph in any LaFerrari takes under 15 seconds.
The Aperta for sale is finished in stealth spec: Nero Daytona black paint, 20-inch forged wheels in black, yellow brake calipers, and is heavily optioned with carbon. Inside there’s a black interior with red accents. The 2017 car was delivered new to Dubai where it has had just one owner and covered 510km.
The LaFerrari coupe in the sale, by comparison, has been well used: the 2015 car has covered 5,900km with its sole owner, also in Dubai. It is finished in Grigio Reventon Lucido (a gunmetal grey) over a black and red interior. Options include lots of Alcantara and carbon-fibre, sports exhaust and gloss black wheels. Its presale estimate is £2.3-2.8m.
When new the LaFerrari (499 made) and Aperta (just 210) sold out straight away – and could have been sold many times over. They have gone on to cement their position as the ultimate roadgoing Ferraris of the 21st century, Italian heroes that are more than a match for any hypercar ever made.
And now at Goodwood, the perfect opportunity to buy two of them! His ’n hers Ferraris perhaps….
