5 single-seaters not to miss at 2017's Revival

Vanwall 

It just had to head this list. As our esteemed contributor Doug Nye mused, the tale of Sir Stirling Moss aboard the British racing green teardrop taking victory honours for Queen and Country at Aintree 60 years ago gives genuine cause to swell with pride: the first Brit win, in a British car on a British circuit in F1. We can’t wait to see it out alongside some of “those bloody red cars” that Tony Vandervell was so determined to defeat back in the halcyon days of the front-engined Grand Prix car.

Lancia-Ferrari D50A

The D50 lead a troubled existence, first showing incredible promise in the final round of the 1954 season, with Ascari poling a full second ahead of Fangio in his once-dominant Merc’. Engine failure would rob it of the overall win. From then on, excellent pace would be hampered by driver and car endurance issues such that the D50 would never achieve the domination it deserved under Lancia stewardship. Ascari’s tragic death testing a Ferrari 750S sportscar would prove to be an omen Lancia couldn’t ignore. Ferrari jumped on the D50, running it in '56 with Fangio at the wheel. It would finally garner glory, just clinching the championship for Fangio with a second-place in the final race of the season, following five wins of the season’s eight races. You can spot the D50 running in the ’57 season demo, easily recognisable by those fantastic fuel tanks sat between the front and back wheels that afforded it that aerodynamic and weight distribution advantage.

Lister-Jaguar Monzanapolis

The Race of Two Worlds. Is there a cooler name for a race in all of motorsport history? Moreover, is there a cooler race? American and European disciplines and teams meet at the “new” Monza oval (which bore a resemblance to Indy – hence the nickname “Monzanapolis”) for a clash of intercontinental motorsport titans. F1 locks horns with the US auto club, with Maserati 250Fs racing alongside Jaguar D-types, and, this: the Lister Jaguar Monzanapolis. It’s an XK-engined single-seater conceived on the orders of Ecurie Ecosse purely for the 1958 running. It’s Indycar meets sports prototype in the best way. That it’s racing in the Richmond Trophy AND showing face during the to-be spectacular Ecurie Ecosse celebration demo’ makes it a must-spot single-seater at 2017’s Revival.

Tecnica-Meccanica-Maserati

The Tecnica-Meccanica-Maserati that’s racing in this year’s Richmond Trophy, aside from its very interesting back story, has a score to settle. Last year it was on for a win and then the smoke came. The car slowed, plumes billowing, before pirouetting off the track to retirement. All this after quite the calamitous run in with a Scarab that sent that car’s nose flying off behind. An unfortunate end to an otherwise promising effort, but it’s back this year for revenge. Look out for a very 250F-esque machine with a be-lumped and intake-clad snout and a cute little Tec-Mec cog emblem.

ERA R5B “Remus” 

Of the pre-war monsters, in fact, of pretty much any car in the world, “Remus” if you can believe it, is regarded as one of if not the most raced cars in the world. It’s raced pretty much without pause (bar the war years) since its manufacture. “Remus” is also something of a golden chariot, having once been jockeyed by the famous racing royal, Prince Bira of Siam. You can pretty much guarantee that it’ll be going absolutely flat-out ripping up the sidewalls during the Goodwood Trophy. One to definitely catch in action, as well as stationary. Those otherworldly pre-war weapon dimensions are curious to behold.
