The first part of the Revival’s motorcycle race was just as thrilling as Friday’s qualifying session promised.
Riders line up for the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy in a traditional echelon – or “Le Mans start” – running across the track to mount their machines. Pole sitter Jeremy McWilliams, on the #7 Norton Daytona Manx, got the best start, but was soon dicing for the lead with John McGuinness and Michael Rutter.
Troy Corser, on his own BMW, had a terrible start, but was soon making up places as he set fastest lap after fastest lap. Before long he was challenging for the lead himself, but then McWilliams’ Norton let go on the Lavant Straight.
Most of the field came in for the rider change together, but Corser stayed out. His later stop proved to be his undoing – Herbert Schwab needed a bump start from the team, dropping him down the order, first behind Michael Russell on the Velocette and then Glen English on the Manx.
Drama came right at the end of the race. Coming through the Chicane, Russell dropped the bike from a comfortable lead. This left Glen English to take the win by a few yards from Ian Bain on another Norton Manx.
