The Freddie March Memorial Trophy takes the Friday evening slot normally occupied by the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy for Revival 2022. Why? Because it’s 70 years since the very first Goodwood Nine Hours, a triple-A enduro of early 1950s sportscar racing.
The car that won that original race is up for grabs with Bonhams on Saturday but first, we pit the Nine Hours-eligible early ‘50s sportscars of the Freddie March against each other in the waning light.
The hour-long thrash was kicked off by an Alard 2J, Jaguar C-Type and Cooper-Jaguar T33, leading a grid of Aston Martins, Frazer Nashs, Ferraris, Coopers, Connoughts away from the line towards Madgwick.
A more romantic racing scene we may not see this weekend, as the Sun sets and the dull lights of these aged machines twinkle on. With imagery to evoke the original Nine Hours that took place all those years ago, these diminutive sportscars cut, dive, bang doors and gears as if gunning for contemporary silverware.
