The most beautiful race in the world? We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, especially this year with the added emotional element of a tribute to Mr Goodwood. It is of course the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy, formerly the Kinrara Trophy, for stunning pre-‘63 GT racers of a type Sir Stirling himself raced in period, right here at our Motor Circuit. If the Revival is all about evocative scenes, these stunning machines piercing their way through the waning light is Revival incarnate.
Aston Martin, Ferrari, Jaguar, AC, Lotus, Chevrolet – GT and sportscar giants all – are represented with the models that cemented their legends 60 years ago. At the Revival, they along with Sir Stirling himself, are immortal.
Don’t let the flowery language fool you into thinking this was some sort of parade, however. This was a race and a race of attrition at that. Up front the one-two-three battle between a trio of E-types was spectacular, with Martin Brundle right in the mix. That was until after the driver change when Alex Brundle spun out on his own oil, following his engine letting go in spectacular fashion. Another E-type hit his oil and met the tyres and during the safety car a 250 SWB gave up the ghost. After 20 minutes of safety car, it was an E-type one-two-three sprint to the finish, with Cottingham in the lead. Beauties doing battle to the bitter end.
