The 2019 Goodwood Revival was brought to a close by arguably the sleekest cars of all, the World Sportscar Championship designs that raced from 1952-1955. As the shadows lengthened all around the Motor Circuit, a feast of streamlined coachwork recalled the elegance and speed that were synonymous with the Goodwood Nine Hours in period.

The race saw Ferrari, Maserati, Austin Healey, Cooper and Tojeiro among the leading European entries, while the vast and stylish Ford Thunderbird ‘Battlebird’ weighed in for America. Yet it was a race that would fall to the Jaguar D-Types, arguably the most iconic design of the era, and in particular those driven by racing brothers John and Gary Pearson.

Gary took the lead from pole position in his British Racing Green example, while John fought his way up to second in a pristine white D-Type from third place on the grid. The ebbing sunlight glinted on the curvaceous contenders up and down the field with Richard Wilson’s beautiful Maserati 250S finishing third, James Cottingham leading the way for Ferrari in fifth and the Battlebird ending up a creditable sixth at the finish.
