Karun Chandhok, one of the most popular men to have raced in Formula 1 in recent years, made a notable addition on his CV in this year’s Whitsun Trophy, when he scored victory in a McLaren.
Rather than a Grand Prix car, however, it was a thunderous 6.0-litre Can-Am car of 1964 vintage that the Indian ace was driving in the fastest race at the Revival for unlimited sports cars.
Chandhok and his fellow front row qualifier Mike Whitaker, in a 1966 Lola T70, had shot away from the start into a battle entirely of their own, while behind them the might of the other Le Mans and Can-Am machines in the field put on plenty of brawny action and delivered a riotous V8 soundtrack.
