This time around, it will be this new race that concludes Friday’s activities by powering on as day turns into night. Open to closed-cockpit GT cars from before 1963, the Kinrara Trophy will combine the spirit of the Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy races of period with the thrill of headlights being turned on as darkness falls, with cars every bit as luscious as the majority of those in the Tourist Trophy.
As in period, there will be Aston Martin DB4 GTs, Ferrari 250 SWBs and GTOs as well as steel-bodied Jaguar E-types and Austin-Healey 100/6s and later 3000s. The first of these to show its hand at Goodwood was the 100/6, with John Dalton winning in one in 1957 and then Jack Sears following suit the following year at the Whitsun meeting.
In 1960, Stirling Moss won the race for closed cars at the Easter meeting in Equipe Endeavour’s DB4 GT. Then the Ferrari 250 GT SWB claimed its first Goodwood victory when Moss won the Tourist Trophy in Rob Walker’s dark-blue-and-white beauty, a feat he repeated in 1961, with Mike Parkes winning at the Easter Meeting earlier that year, Aston Martins and Jaguars in perpetual pursuit.
Then in 1962 it was the turn of Innes Ireland to win for Ferrari, in the new GTO, a feat repeated by Graham Hill in 1963, by which time Jaguar had improved its E-type attack by turning the cars into Lightweights, with aluminium bodies, and reaped immediate benefits when Hill was able to beat Parkes’s Maranello Concessionaires-entered 250 GTO in the GT race at the Easter meeting, suggesting that the tide was turning.
