In wet and slippery conditions, it was the Austin Healey of Tim Crighton battling Marc Gordon’s Jaguar XK150 away from the start, but the nimble Healey took the advantage through St. Mary’s and was just about able to keep the Jag behind into The Chicane.
This pair continued their fight for the entirety of the race, swapping positions lap after lap in a thoroughly entertaining scrap before the red flag was flown with four minutes to go.
There was plenty of action behind the lead battle, too. Charles Morgan in his Morgan Plus 4 was embroiled in a constant melee with the Porsche 356s of Myles Poulton, Max Minshull and Robert Barrie.
But it was the battle for the lead that never let up, producing one of the most enjoyable races of the Revival in cars we aren’t so used to seeing racing around the Goodwood Motor Circuit. We loved the action, we loved the variety and we loved the intensity of these gorgeous ‘50s racers.
