We opened the fun with a parade of Meyers Manxes, celebrating 60 years of the famous buggy. Then Official Practice for the Sussex Trophy gave us our first taste of the frantic action that would become a feature of the day. The tricky conditions made for some spectacular moments in every single session as drivers and riders wrestled with their machinery, some having more fun than others.
Richard Woolmer in particular, at the wheel of his Austin-Healey, was loving life out on track as he drifted his way through Official Practice for the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy. There was also a starring performance from two-time Isle of Man TT winner Davey Todd as he set a stunning time to qualify on pole position for Part 1 of the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy. The bikes looked to be on a knife edge throughout, as did the Grand Prix and Voiturette monsters of the Goodwood Trophy as they struggled to put their power down onto the slick tarmac.
Away from the competitive action, we also took moments to remember John Surtees, 60 years after he took his Formula 1 world championship victory, and celebrate the legendary Jaguar XK engine with a parade of several iconic cars.
The day ended as it started with the Sussex Trophy field returning to the grid for the first race of the event on Friday evening, racing hard on a drying track as the sun set on day one here at Goodwood.
