We made a fair bit of noise when Dario Franchitti made his return to racing at the 2019 Goodwood Revival, and for good reason: it was the four-time IndyCar champion’s first race weekend in six years. But while Dario’s big race of the weekend was the RAC TT Celebration, the first race was Friday evening’s Kinrara Trophy. And this is the onboard video from his very first lap.
In fact this is Dario’s very first lap at speed in the Ferrari 250 SWB, because the morning’s practice session began with the car’s owner, John Hugenholtz, pulling off the track with a mechanical issue before Dario had a chance to get behind the wheel. No practice for Dario, then, and to make life more difficult the race began with a standing start, something Dario didn’t need to do for his time in IndyCar.
Thankfully he nailed the start, and as you’ll hear, the 250 SWB mechanical issues were resolved and the V12 engine was singing at the top of its voice. What an intoxicating noise.
