Friday at the Goodwood Revival does one or both of two things. It’s always a preview of what’s to come over the course of the weekend, but sometimes it’s a full-on dive into the deep end. Revival 2023 is definitely one of those, with a hot track ready to receive sticky tyres right from the off.
While the unseasonably hot autumnal weather was good for getting tyres quickly up to temperature, it made it something of an endurance test for drivers layered up in fireproof overalls. Not that they were complaining, with the Goodwood Motor Circuit at their fingertips and a hunger to set the quickest times.
Most of the Friday running is given over to practice, and at one time or another the entirety of the paddock has its time on track. Whether your preference is for pre-war single-seaters, post-war saloon cars, motorcycles or big, bad Can-Am cars from Goodwood’s last days as a contemporary motorsport venue, there’s something for you in this full Friday highlights video.
As well as the competitive action, there are a number of daily track parades, including one in memory of Queen Elizabeth II where a number of royal estate Land Rovers and Range Rovers take to the circuit. Off track, you’ll see a number of additional Revival attractions, including the Revive and Thrive section of the show.
There’s no commentary in this video, so you can enjoy the ambient sound of a wide variety of machinery. Turn your volume up for the monstrous V8 sportscars of the RAC TT Celebration, the unique song of the BRM V16 and the screaming single-seaters of the Glover Trophy. And the sounds are only half of it: you can also witness some tremendous displays of car control as a whole host of world class drivers take to Goodwood’s high speed corners in a broad spread of historic machinery.
After all the practice sessions, the first day of the Revival also plays host to the first race of the weekend, the hour-long Freddie March Memorial Trophy for late 1950s sportscars from the likes of Jaguar, Ferrari and Maserati. The race runs into the darkness, cars still battling to the flag with their lights ablaze as the sun sets.
