Video: Revival 2023 full highlights | Day 2

10th September 2023

Saturday may be the second day of the Goodwood Revival, but it’s the first full day of racing following Friday’s largely practice-led schedule. That said, it kicked off in exactly the same way with a parade of more than 200 motorcycles, including bobbers and choppers that became popular in the years after World War Two.

The first race of the second day was the Goodwood Trophy for pre-war grand prix cars from the likes of ERA, Maserati and Alfa Romeo. The machinery may be very old indeed, but the competition is as fierce as anything you’ll see at Goodwood, as proven by how close the first and second placed cars were as they crossed the line.

Next on the schedule was the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy. If you want to see racers enter Madgwick, Goodwood’s first corner, four abreast, this is the race for you. There’s not enough room for the brutal sportscars of the RAC TT Celebration to enter corners in such numbers, but there’s no shortage of commitment from the drivers. Spend some time aboard NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson’s AC Cobra.

Next we swap from V8 power to pedal power for the Settrington Cup for Austin J40s. Don’t for a moment think this any less competitive than any other race on at Revival – you can see the determination in the young pedallers’ eyes. And if we’re talking competitive, the St. Mary’s Trophy presented by Motul for 1950s saloon cars takes some beating. The drivers thread their cars around Goodwood absolutely on the limit while also being so close to each other you’d swear they’re touching even when they don’t. It’s unmissable.

Another unmissable race at 2023’s Revival is the one-off all-Ferrari Lavant Cup presented by Sky Cinema. While Karun Chandhok’s major moment aboard a 250 GTO may have generated most of the chat, there was plenty else to enjoy as these multi-million pound racers competed wheel to wheel. Sticking with the historically significant theme, the Rudge-Whitworth Trophy featured the oldest surviving Le Mans-winning car.

For 2023, the Fordwater Trophy was an all-Porsche 911 affair (plus some 901s built before Peugeot’s copyright claim on the name forced a change). The racing was very close and display of car control on these notoriously tricky short wheelbase machines. And the final race of day two is the thundering Whitsun Trophy for Can-Am cars.

Aside from the on-track action, we’ve also captured some of the atmosphere from around the circuit. We spend time with a Supermarine Spitfire, the Revive & Thrive Village, chat with TV presenter Noel Edmunds and meet the winners of the Best Dressed competition. Enjoy all of Saturday’s highlights.
