For many very good reasons modern air displays are not what they once were. They’re set higher up, further away from the crowds, and in many cases the pilots aren't allowed to perform quite such ambitious manoeuvres. But that makes looking back at air displays of old all the more impressive.
The air displays at the 1998 Revival (of which there were three) were very special. There were no afterburners, no sonic booms, just simple but hugely impressive aerial acrobatics, in this case from a beautiful Supermarine Spitfire. The V12s on track that weekend were impressive, but hearing a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine roar is something different altogether.
If you love planes, you’ll probably enjoy our Spitfire vs. Range Rover Sport drag race!
