Video: The best moments from Saturday at Revival

The newest car in this video may be celebrating its 50th birthday, but watching historic cars battling around the Goodwood Revival never gets old. Narrowing down the whole day’s action to just ten of the best moments caused much debate, but we got there in the end.

We open with nine-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen scything his way through the St. Mary’s Trophy field in an Austin A90 Westminster. It’s yet another lesson in precision, high-speed, close quarters racing, especially when the fast-moving pack has to dodge around the Saab 93B on the Lavant Straight.

Next up is Sir Jackie Stewart being reunited with his Tyrrell 006. It’s the car in which Stewart won his final of three Formula 1 world championships in 1973, and as you’ll see he didn’t hold back during his demonstration laps around the Goodwood Motor Circuit. What an evocative sight – and sound with that Ford-Cosworth DFV engine singing away behind him. We go back in time by many decades for the next clip, with the pre-war grand prix cars of the Goodwood Trophy. The clip follows Mark Gillies expertly drifting his ERA A-type R3A around the fast, sweeping and slightly slippery early morning circuit.

Moving to two wheels, there was a fabulous battle between 25-time Isle of Man TT winner Michael Dunlop (MV Agusta 500/3) and 2010 British Superbike champion Steve Brogan (Norton Manx 30M). They trade position several times per lap, and there’s some great interaction between the riders as they make their moves.

The all-Ferrari Lavant Cup presented by Sky Cinema is a memory that will live long in the memories of those who witnessed it. In this clip, we see the start of the race and Rob Hall’s terrific start aboard the 250 LM, before a first lap spin and brush with the tyre wall sends him down the order. Meanwhile, the ‘Breadvan’ of Alexander Ames made great moves through the pack after starting from the back of the grid. By the second corner, he’d already worked his way through half the field. By the end of the first lap, he had made 11 places.

Slower in pace but no less competitive is the pedal-powered Settrington Cup for four to ten-year-olds. The Austin J40 race is the biggest grid of the Revival weekend and always elicits a supportive crowd as the small racers pedal hard in the hope of glory. This is Part 1; the final result will be an aggregate that takes into account Sunday’s Part 2.

Next up is the Rudge-Whitworth Cup for cars from the very earliest days of Le Mans. The field includes the Bentley that won the second ever 24 Hour, which is the oldest surviving Le Mans winning car. After that, we join Mark Webber making his historic racing debut aboard a Porsche 911 for the single-make Fordwater Trophy. We round out the top ten with two clips featuring V8 thumpers: the Whitsun Trophy for Can-Am cars and multiple NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson wrestling an AC Cobra in the RAC TT Celebration.
