Your in-lap, when Bono shouts ‘box box, box box’ over the radio, is probably the most important lap of your race. So imagine rather than being in a state-of-the art racing machine with a radio in your ear and a team of engineers telling you to push, you’re actually in a car from the 1960s, with crossply tyres, a pit board as the only thing to tell you to come in and a massive V8 more in control than you are.
That is the position in which Martin Stretton found himself during the RAC TT Celebration at the Goodwood Revival in 2018. Running in a fight for victory Stretton was called in by his pit board to hand over the car to his team-mate. Knowing this was his last chance to affect the result, he proceeded to push the Cobra as hard as he could, bucking and weaving his way to one of the most spectacular laps of Goodwood you’ll ever see.
