Gallery: Elegant speed in the Lavant Cup

Celebrating motor racing at Goodwood between 1952 to 1960 makes the Lavant Cup one of the most sophisticated races at Goodwood SpeedWeek presented by Mastercard.

All different shapes and sizes, the beautiful sportscars on track looked majestic as they danced their way around the Goodwood Motor Circuit on their skinny little tyres. Perhaps the most elegant of all the races we’ve seen this weekend, the field was stacked with stunners including Jaguar D-types, Jaguar C-types, Maserati 250 and 300s, Austin Healeys, Aston Martin DB3s and a Lister-Jaguar 'flat iron’. Truly spoilt.

The Maserati Tipo 61 'Birdcage' was on pole on Sunday with Marino Franchitti. James Cottingham was breathing down his neck in a Tojeiro-Jaguar with Ben Adams wanting a piece of the action in the Lola-Climax Mk1 in third.

Pushing on throughout, the 20-minute race was eagerly contested with drivers hustling their cars all the way around the flowing circuit. When all was said and done, it was Marino Franchitti who dominated at the front, bringing home his father-in-law’s Maserati ‘BirdCage’ in one piece to receive a well-deserved laurel leaf winners garland.

Second place went to a late-charging Cottingham with Philip Quaife rounding out the podium following an intense race-long battle with fourth placed Martin Stretton.
