Tom Kristensen, Tiff Needell and Andre Lotterer were just three of the names on the grid for part one of the St. Mary’s Trophy. They were pedalling cars as diverse as the Alfa Romeo GTA, Jaguar Mk2 and Ford Galaxie respectively, with the rest of the field featuring Minis, Lotus Cortinas and more.
A field of deftly driven 1960s saloon cars always provides plenty of close racing and lots of overtaking. What’s more, the familiar saloon car shapes make the whole spectacle very relatable – the competing machines look like they’ve been extracted from a mid-’60s commute and sent into battle on track.
