05th October 2020
Seán Ward

Goodwood SpeedWeek presented by Mastercard is now only a matter of days away, and to say we are excited would be a massive understatement. But how can you get the most out of this incredible one-off, watch-from-home event? With SpeedWeek@Home.

As the only people at SpeedWeek from Friday 16th to Sunday 18th October will be the drivers, mechanics and Goodwood staff members working the event, we want to make sure you get a taste of Goodwood in your own home. To help you get involved there is SpeedWeek@Home with a number of competitions for both young and old Goodwood fans to go beyond simply watching the stream.

So, without further ado, here’s what’s happening and how you can get involved, and for more information on everything below visit the main SpeedWeek@Home page. And don’t forget, you can find out more about SpeedWeek with our handy guide, or read about the drivers who’ll be racing at SpeedWeek here.

Best Dressed

When the 78th Members’ Meeting was sadly postponed in March a number of drivers and fans made it their duty to get kitted out in all the period gear at home (we’re particularly looking at you, Darren Turner). For SpeedWeek we’re bringing back the Revival Best Dressed competition, a massive Revival favourite, in which we're encouraging you to get dressed up at home as you would for any historic Goodwood motorsport event and share with us your outfits. The vintage looks will be judged by none other than fashion icon Twiggy, with both a Gent’s and a Lady’s prize, and each winner will recieve VIP tickets to the 2021 Revival, a Huawei phone and a bottle of Veuve Clicquot. All you need to do is share your look on Instagram with the hashtag #RevivalBestDressed.

Design a Mini

In lockdown we tried to keep the young motorsport fans entertained with a series of colouring in contests, and for SpeedWeek we’re hoping that the colouring pencils, glitter and paint will be liberated from the cupboard once again for a ‘Design a Mini’ competition. The task, as the name suggests, is to create an inspiring and colourful livery design for a classic 1960s Mini Cooper S. The template can be found on the SpeedWeek@Home page, and anyone under the age of 12 is eligible to enter, uploading a photo of the design to a responsible adult’s Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #SpeedWeekMini. The prize? To see a real Mini race car to compete at the 2021 Revival painted with your design, and to attend the event to see the car race. Get designing!

Central Feature Competition

Every year thousands and thousands of people see, stand next to and take pictures of the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard’s Central Feature. The first Central Feature of sorts was an Aston Martin DB7 atop a plinth in front of Goodwood House at the first Festival in 1993. From 1997 onwards, though, the design reins were taken by artist Gerry Judah, giving us some truly mesmerising creations. As there was no Festival in 2020, postponed until 2021, there was no Central Feature. Until now. For this competition, however, it will not be Judah doing the designing, as we’re asking you to create your own Central Feature at home. You need to think of a story or theme, gather the building materials (extra points for recycled, upcycled or sustainable materials) and upload your sculpture to Instagram or Twitter using the hashtag #SpeedWeekCentralFeature. The designs will be judged by Grand Design’s Kevin McCloud, and the winner will receive a VIP experience for two at the Festival of Speed in 2021.

Beat the pros

So, you’re handy on Gran Turismo Sport are you? Think you’re as quick as the pros? Well, if you’ve ever watched racing at Goodwood and thought ‘I could do better than that?’, now’s your chance to shine. The ‘beat the pros’ competition gives you the chance to win a Rally Stage: After Dark experience, where a professional rally driver will race through the woodland course under the cover of darkness with you in the co-driver’s seat on the eve of the 2021 Festival of Speed. You’ll then be treated to some drinks next to a forest firepit and an overnight stay in the Goodwood Hotel, as well as tickets to the following day of Festival action. All you need to do is record a flying lap around Goodwood on Gran Turismo Sport using the Gran Turismo F1500T-A, and post the resulting lap to either Instagram or Twitter, using the hashtag #MastercardHotlaps. If you are fast enough your time will be included in our top 25 leaderboard alongside professional racing drivers recorded both before SpeedWeek and in a specially set-up rig on site.

Spirit of SpeedWeek

There might not have been a Cartier Style et Luxe concours or Richmond Lawn at Goodwood in 2020, but that doesn’t mean there can’t be anything like that at all this year… For Spirit of SpeedWeek we’re suggesting you create some of your favourite Goodwood elements at home. Perhaps you could have a Supercar Paddock on your driveway? Or wave at your adoring fans from your own Goodwood House bathroom window balcony? Or maybe even turn a garage or parking space into a Motor Circuit pit box? Whatever you come up with, share your selfies and pictures with us using the hashtag #SpiritOfSpeedWeek, and our favourites will make it into the SpeedWeek broadcast.
