A fair contender for the title of comeback king at Goodwood Revival 2018 has to be BTCC star Sam Tordoff in his Porsche 356.
Following a blistering pole-winning qualifying run, just pipping Darren Turner’s Aston Martin DB2, Tordoff faced a nightmare situation as he moved to lead the Fordwater Trophy. Imagine, a pack of cars behind, an open track ahead, the flag drops and you… stall.
Most of us would curl up in the footwell and cry while hoping none of the pack makes contact. Not Tordoff and indeed, not most racing drivers. Sometimes success takes tenacity and perseverance in the face of near-impossible odds. So with his work cut out for him, Tordoff got going again and proceeded to scythe his way through the pack – from last to second. What a masterclass display, a monster drive, largely compacted into eight minutes. We’d be surprised if he could remember a single moment of it. The racing driver red mist must have descended in order to get the job done...
While 2020 has deprived us of the kind of historic motorsport action we’re used to seeing at the Motor Circuit around this time of year, help is shortly at hand. Goodwood SpeedWeek presented by Mastercard is the one-off wonder we’re bringing to you in October, featuring staple metal from the Revival, Members’ Meeting and Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard.
