Ah, the Mercedes SLS. A tyre-shredding, shouty V8 lunatic on the road, but, as it turned out, quite a competent racer. Although given half the chance, as you’re about to see, it could still utterly obliterate a set of tyres.
The SLS GT3 wasn’t as successful as, say, the Ferrari 458 Italia GT3, but it took a number of victories in various series, the most notable being the 2013 Spa 24 Hours, becoming the first Mercedes to win at the Spa 24 since the 300SE of Robert Crevits and Gustave Gosselin in 1964.
Someone who became very familiar with the SLS GT3 was Bernd Schneider, and man who goes as well with AMGs as ketchup goes with fish and chips. For Mercedes he’s something of a legend, having won five DTM titles, one International Touring Car Championship title and one FIA GT title with the company. Oh, and he raced at Le Mans for Mercedes three times, and came out of retirement to race the SLS GT3 at the 2013 Dubai 12 Hours, Bathurst 12 Hours, 24 Hours of Nürburgring and the Spa 24. He and his team-mates won all of them.
