Mover over Jaguar, Aston and Ferrari – the top-priced lot at the Bonhams sale at the 76th Members’ Meeting was an… AC. And it wasn’t even a Cobra.
The 1958 Ace roadster, one of only 21 built in this form in ’58, sold for an impressive £204,220 including the premium. The car, with one owner since 1996, was fully restored between 2007 and 2015. Black Pearl and trimmed in red leather, it was originally sold new by a dealer in Worthing.
Made as one of the comparatively rare AC-engined cars, rather than Bristol or Ford-engined, the car in the sale is said to still have the original 2.0-litre engine it came with when new. As Bonhams said, “a design classic in its earliest and purest form.”
Elsewhere there were plenty of bargains on offer at the sale, which after the million-pound Ferrari F12 Tour de France was withdrawn, lacked a big-ticket star.
