Gallery: 76MM Ronnie Hoare Trophy – '60s GT cars in battle

18th March 2018
Andrew Willis

The first glimpse of competitive racing at the 76th Members’ Meeting was delivered on Saturday evening by the Ronnie Hoare Trophy. Named in honour of Maranello Concessionaires founder Colonel Ronnie Hoare, the race made its Members’ Meeting debut in dramatic style, showcasing some of the finest examples of glamorous sports cars from the 1960s.

Mercifully, the worst of Saturday’s snow showers stopped just in time for the likes of Ferrari 275 GTB/Cs, Alfa Romeo TZ1s, Morgan Plus 4 SLRs, MGBs, Porsche 911s and Triumph TR4s to compete in ‘reasonable’ conditions.

The Goodwood circuit still threw in a few headaches for several drivers, notably a Ferrari 275 GTB/C driven by Vincent Gaye taking a dramatic trip across the infield after pushing hard for the lead during the final moments of the race amongst a gaggle of tail-enders.

That spin all but ensured victory for James Cottingham who had dominated the field within a Porsche 904 whilst allowing the agile and light Morgan Plus SLR driven by James Bellinger to take a spirited and impressive second place. The top three was rounded out by Vincent Gaye in the Ferrari 275 GTB/C, who still managed a third place finish despite the costly spin, confirming his lightning pace in drying conditions.
