For the initial practice sessions at 78MM it was very much a trial by fire for the Gerry Marshall Trophy Group 1 touring cars as they filed out onto a track freshly laced by an autumnal deluge. Needless to say, the slippy conditions made for slidey antics and an appropriate test for any driver that fancies themself a dab hand.
This year we’re running the Gerry Marshall a little differently. Replacing the race and sprint format will be two heats and a final. These heats will split the under 3.0-litre cars and the over 3.0-litre cars, with the fastest of both battling it out in the final.
Other than the slight format change, it’s the usual nostalgic crop of 1970s and 1980s everyman cars from both sides of the pond in race-spec lining up to battle it out. In the blue oval corner, Capris, Fiestas, Escorts and Mustangs. In the General’s corner, Chevrolet Camaros and a selection of Opels and Vauxhalls. From British Leyland, everything from Rover SD1s to Dollies Metros and Minis. From Italy, a couple of lovely Alfa Romeos. It’s a fabulous line-up, and it’s great to see them out on track once again.
