Get an exclusive preview of the Tyrrell Shed at 81MM
You may have seen over the past few months that Goodwood has been carrying out an important rescue mission. A relic of motorsport’s past was in danger of being destroyed, but with the help of the Duke of Richmond the Tyrrell Shed, home of the great Tyrrell Formula 1 team, has been rehomed at the Goodwood Motor Circuit.
We’re pleased to say the recovery works are now complete, and the shed is now safely in its new home on the Hurricane Lawn. If you’re in attendance at the 81st Members’ Meeting, you’re one of the lucky few with an opportunity to get an exclusive preview of this wonderful piece of history ahead of its official opening later this year at the 2024 Goodwood Revival.
Tucked away in a quiet corner behind the Bonhams|Cars auction, the Tyrrell Shed is well worth a diversion away from the bustle of the paddocks. Not only to experience the atmosphere of genuine motorsport history – the shed has been meticulously maintained to retain the original feel of the building, exactly as it would have been when it was used to manufacture Tyrrell’s early championship-winning cars – but also to marvel at two classic racing cars. There’s a Tyrrell 001, which would have been built in this very shed, and the Tyrrell 008, a car that won the Monaco Grand Prix with Patrick Depailler in 1978.
The 001 was Tyrrell’s first attempt at building its own car, after decided to move away from the March chassis it had used during the 1970 season. It was a proof of concept for Tyrrell’s decision to become a bona fide manufacturer, and only competed in five grands prix. In the hands of Jackie Stewart, it took pole position at the 1970 Canadian Grand Prix and the 1971 South African Grand Prix where the Scot managed a second-place finish.
Tyrrell had already begun its gradual decline from dominance by the time the 008 came around in 1978, but with Depailler and Didier Pironi the car took the team to fourth in the constructors’ championship. Depailler’s victory at Monaco was the team’s last until Michele Alboreto won at Caesar’s Palace in 1982.
Incidentally the very 008 that sits in the Tyrrell shed this weekend will be up for sale as part of the Bonhams|Cars 'Les Grandes Marques à Monaco' auction on 10th May 2024, with a valuation of €1,100,000-€1,400,000.
