Behind all of the action both on and off track at the Goodwood Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport, is a competition that incorporates the efforts of every single person in attendance at the event.
The Goodwood House Cup is a tradition that began when the Members’ Meetings returned to the regular Motor Circuit schedule in 2014, and sees the four Houses: Methuen, Aubigny, Darnley and Torbolton, compete against each other for points, bidding to earn the House Shield. Each House is led by a Team Captain, four great racing drivers who are the regular faces of the Members’ Meeting.
Andy Priaulx, Captain of Aubigny, was a dominant force in the world of touring car racing in the 2000s, winning the European Touring Car Championship once, and the World Touring Car Championship three times between 2004 and 2007.
After a junior single seater career that saw him compete with relative success in Formula 3 and dominate the Renault Spider Cup in 1999 by winning all 13 races from pole position, Priaulx’s attention switched to touring cars in 2002. He completed a full season of the British Touring Car Championship and claimed one victory to finish fifth in the Drivers’ Championship.
He graduated to the European series with BMW in 2003, and claimed his first Championship a year later with a brilliantly consistent season that included five race wins, as BMW claimed the Manufacturers’ title.
The World Touring Car Championship returned in 2005, and Priaulx competed again with BMW, where his consistency saw him take 11 podiums from 20 races to seal his second major title. At the wheel of his BMW 320i Priaulx was relentlessly quick, securing the Championship in 2006 by a single point before completing the WTCC hattrick in 2007.
Since then, Priaulx has enjoyed a varied career in endurance racing, competing at the Le Mans 24 Hours on six occasions and taking podium finishes in the GTE Pro class in both 2011 and 2017. He spent his later career racing for Ford in the World Endurance Championship, where he achieved a best finish of third in the standings, claiming four class wins over three seasons.
As one of Britain’s most successful drivers, it’s only right that Andy Priaulx’s achievements are recognised at Goodwood, and his position as Captain of Aubigny, where he replaced Nicolas Minassian in 2023, is fitting of his status as a touring car great. He’ll be a major character at the 82nd Members’ Meeting, alongside fellow House Captains Dario Franchitti, Tom Kristensen and Gordon Shedden.
Ahead of his first outing in his new role at the 81st Members’ Meeting, Priaulx said: “Of course, I hope Aubigny can win the House Shield. But first and foremost it’s an honour to be chosen as a House Captain at the Members’ Meeting. We are all racing drivers, so we want to win, but we’re there for the club members and we want to have some fun.”
He certainly had some fun last time out, claiming top five finishes in both the Gordon Spice Trophy and the Ken Miles Cup, driving a pair of big V8-engined American monsters. He’ll be hoping to bring home some silverware at the 82nd Members’ Meeting to score House Shield glory for Aubigny.
Priaulx will be in action once again at the 82nd Members’ Meeting, which gets underway on 12th and 13th April. Tickets are now available for Members and Fellows of the GRRC.
