James Hillier won the Hailwood Trophy race for two-stroke 250cc and 350cc Grand Prix motorcycles on Saturday afternoon.
He guided Ron Wills’ Yamaha TZ350G to honours from fifth on the grid, although it was Andy Hornby who initially made a break for it from third aboard his RPS Triumph Trident. Sadly, his race ended in retirement.
The lead pack set a searing pace and were picking their way through backmarkers after three laps, with Richard Wilson starring thereafter on Richard Peckett’s 1972 Triumph Trident. However, he was jumped by a determined Hillier on the exit of Lavant on the penultimate lap and trailed the winner by 0.772 seconds. Harris Yamaha rider Dan Jackson was 2.492 down on the victorious Hillier in third.
Hillier said after the race: “I enjoyed that. It took me a little while to get going. I had to work out where the grip was, but it was a good battle.”
