Third place qualifier Jon Minshaw in the Lola-Chevrolet T70 Spyder got the drop on pole-sitter Nick Padmore in an identical Spyder and second place Chris Goodwin’s McLaren-Chevrolet M1B. He was followed into Madgwick by the Chinook-Chevrolet of Jay Esterer and another Lola-Chevrolet T70 driven by Alex Buncombe.
An astonishing move round the outside of Fordwater by Esterer put the Chinook in the lead. At the end of lap one the top six in the standings were Esterer, Padmore, Minshaw, Goodwin, Buncombe and Hart. Padmore continuously harried the twitchy Chinook until finding his way up the inside at Fordwater on lap four while Minshaw, on a charge in fourth place, set a new record of 1:18.759.
A retirement by Esterer soon after handed second place to Minshaw, followed by Goodwin as Padmore extended his lead, setting another record of 1:18.732 seconds on lap six. Minshaw and Goodwin traded fastest sectors and set personal best laps as they chased down a rapidly disappearing Padmore. An overreach by Minshaw with six minutes remaining saw the Lola-Chevrolet nose the tyre wall, putting Goodwin in second and promoting Buncombe to third where they remained to the chequered flag.
