A very even start from the all Ford Mustang front row with Steve Soper leading into Madgwick, followed by Craig Davies and Michael Squire, the latter displaced by Rob Hall in the Ford Falcon Sprint who dived up the inside to snatch second.
The flame-spitting Squire car fought back and it was a Mustang one-two-three at the end of the first lap but the Falcon was back in the top three by the end of lap two. Olivier Hart in another Mustang and Nick Whale’s Studebaker Lark Daytona 500 rounded out the top six for a couple of laps until Bill Shepherd’s giant Ford Galaxie 500 muscled its way through.
Davies began to reel Soper in at the midpoint of the race, cutting into the leader’s 3.5 second lead until the two matching rad and gold Mustangs were nose to tail by lap eight. Meanwhile the Hall and Hart battle for third was providing great entertainment as the two huge cars drifted in tandem until Hart finally forced his way through on the inside at Lavant on lap before dropping back to fourth on the same lap.
Davies and Craig were side-by-side through Lavant as the latter tried to come around the outside but Soper held position. On the following lap, approaching traffic, Davies was finally able to dive up the inside of Soper at Fordwater to take the lead with five minutes remaining. The pair traded paint for the next few minutes until a coming together at St Mary’s had them both cutting the grass of the infield. Soper regained the tarmac in the lead but the race was almost immediately red-flagged after Leo Voyazides’s Falcon Sprint ended up in the tyre wall. Davies was declared the winner.
