A perfectly timed start from James Colburn took his Lenham Sprite GT from the outside of the front row to the lead by Madgwick, followed by Thomas Grindall in the Williams & Pritchard GT MG Midget before Richard Woolmer reclaimed his second place starting spot in the Austin Healey Sebring Sprite.
Woolmer was ahead by the time the pack reached the Lavant straight, finishing the first lap in the lead. A challenge from Colburn saw both cars side-by-side through Madgwick but Woolmer’s yellow Sebring Sprite held firm. The pair traded P1 twice more over the course of the second lap with the extra grip of the Lenham cancelling out the additional grunt of the Sebring Sprite. A safety car period for the recovery of the Turner Mk2 of Richard’s father Paul Woolmer closed up the field with Colburn in the lead.
Restarting with just over ten minutes to go Colburn and Woolmer again pulled away from the rest of the field, led by Charles Rainford in the Austin Healey Lenham Le Mans Sprite. Desperately unhappily, Wollmer experienced a problem in the Sebring Sprite, slowing him dramatically before he was tagged by Jim Dean in another Sebring Sprite, putting both definitively out of the race, which was red flagged. A restarted race with just less than eight minutes remaining ended with Colburn leading from Grindall and Shaun Rainford in a Lenham GT.
